Declutter 2 2 – Automatic Desktop Organizer With Smart Folders



  1. Paperless 2 is a software for Windows systems. It helps you get rid of those hard copies of files so you can keep everything organized on your desktop. A larger option than a simple desktop file organizer, this full system from eBay still fits on most desks and has places for plenty of files and other office supplies.
  2. If you’d rather not spend time organising this mess, give Declutter a try from the Mac App Store. Declutter creates some smart folders on your desktop (like music, images, photos, documents, etc) and automatically sorts all your desktop clutter into them. If you prefer to have control, you can tell Declutter when to work.

If you want to make sure to keep your desktop clear, check out our Hazel tutorial. There is a rule to automatically clean off your desktop. While Hazel is a Mac application, you can do the same thing with DropIt on Windows. Limit folder creation. When you’re creating folders, think minimal.

What better way to spend the first day of the year than to declutter! The holidays have been a whirlwind of pop-up shops and Christmas parties for me that our guestroom turned product storage was such a mess. I was also inspired by the blog article that I just finished writing where I am sharing a guide to decrease the physical and virtual mess you see around you.

Stop for a moment and look around your living space. Are you seeing piles of bills, documents and paper bags on your kitchen counter? Are socks, towels, and shirts all over your bedroom floor? Is your workspace full of pens and supplies scattered on the table? Are your closets and drawers vomiting your clothes out? If your living space has never been in any of these messy states, you are indeed a #neatqueen. But most often than not, some of our personal spaces have been messy at one point or another.

It’s the new year and a clean, decluttered space is a must to feel fresh and start anew! Here are the top three things to remember when you start decluttering your homes:

  • With great clutter, comes great accountability

It all starts with the realization. You’ve finally noticed that you’re more stressed and anxious whenever you go inside your home. According to a 2009 study by UCLA, a disorganized living space is a significant factor that causes stress. Another study, recently published in 2017 by Indiana University, showed that disorganized living affects physical activity– the more messy the space is, the less motivation to move and exercise. Ina general sense, it seems like studies have shown that neat and organized spaces affect one’s internal mindset and being. Fixing your mess takes ample effort, determination and courage. Fixing your mess can also mean leading your mindset into a better direction. Hence, there is no excuse to decluttering! Your mess is your responsibility.

Time management, control and discipline are the only requirements needed for you to start and finish such task. It may take zero money for you to start organizing but it takes willpower and discipline to be able to complete it. Like many of the things you do for work, start scheduling when to declutter.   • Bins and boxes are your best friends

According to the ever-trustworthy Cambridge dictionary, it defines declutter as “to remove things you do not need from a place, in order to make it more pleasant and more useful”. This particular definition is exactly what you need to remember! So, how do you to start and not overwhelm yourself? Prepare bins and pick a room. As mentioned by Elizabeth Larkin from the Spruce, there are 5 purposeful bins, baskets or even cardboard boxes to choose from namely Put Away, Recycle, Fix/Mend, Trash and Donate to categorize your clutter.From this, you can start tossing while cleaning. Trust me, you will find this decluttering exercise so soothing and relaxing. I think it’s a common thing for humans to keep things they don’t need. In other words, we all have tendencies to hoard! When tossing something out, ask yourself these questions:

  • Did I use it this year? If not, will I need it for future use?
  • Is it still working? If not, is it fixable?
  • Why do I own this?
  • Will my daily routine function poorly without it?
  • Is it one of a kind (e.g. sentimental, from a faraway country)?

It contains a detailed list on what to prioritize while decluttering each room. Organizers such as paper trays, bookstands and storage baskets are always a good idea when decluttering your home.

  • Don’t forget to also declutter online

As I have mentioned in my previous post, a lot of our lives now are online. And guess what? Our online lives also need some dusting! Largest slot machine win. Technology has been part of everyone’s daily routine. We now live in a world wherein we can save so many documents, photos and other media into one phone, iPad or laptop. Take a look at your mobile phones, laptops and iPads. If it’s overflowing with so many tabs, apps and files with no folders, virtual organizers or whatnot, fix it.

Save a day for decluttering your virtual documents and applications on your desktops, touchscreens and even TV! Just like the tangible, material things, toss photos and documents to the online trash bin to free up storage space and remove eyesore. Create new folders, label them and transfer files to track them easier and more efficiently. Finally, clean your desktop. Try retaining only folders and applications that are of utmost importance (hence, needs to be easily access)- keep your desktops and home screens in the exclusive area of your computers and phones respectively.

You may know by now that clutter is not exclusively about clearing out material things. It aids one’s internal being. A clean, organized space with everyday stress and anxiety. The look and cleanliness of your living space can complement over-all performance. Daily mindset is shaped by our environment, and our bedroom, which is an integral part of our homes, is the first space we wake up to. It is better to see a neat nightstand than a messy one. It can turn on a switch of motivation to start your day right. Decluttering does not necessarily mean transforming your space into a minimalist. It is relieving your space of mess that are not useful anymore, but maintaining those that boost your life and how you live it.

Clutter doesn’t just occupy the house in which you live, it occupies your mind. Learn to maintain your mind. Learn to do a daily clean up. All research projects involve two types of activity; work that generates novel information that makes a positive contribution to the world’s store of knowledge and notifying the world about said novel discovery. In the future, researchers will be able to keep working away at the first kind of activity and intelligent agents will follow behind them collecting that information, adding context and provenance, and streaming it to the worldwide knowledge collective. Today, researchers have to do this part themselves and I don’t think I’m overgeneralizing when I say it’s one of the least favorite parts of the research life. Short of the “generating great ideas for you” feature that’s coming in the next release (ahem), it’s the area that we at Mendeley can most effectively target to make research more efficient. I’m going to share with you a couple quick tips to take some of the aggravation and administrative overhead out of organization.

Don’t be a librarian!

Seriously, we love librarians at Mendeley, but if you’re a researcher and you’ve got a system for organizing your PDFs on your hard drive that’s more complex than the Library of Congress classification system, chances are you’ve either missed your calling or you’ve spent a great deal of time on organization schemes that you would rather have spent doing actual research. Mendeley Desktop has a flexible system of folders and groups designed to make it easy to organize your documents with minimal effort. To use them effectively, it helps to understand how they work in Mendeley, which I describe below.

Folder vs. Groups

In Mendeley Desktop there are two sections in the organizer on the left. One section is for folders and one section is for groups. Folders are for personal organization on your computers locally, groups are for sharing documents with others (although you can have subfolders of groups). The important thing to know is that when you move a document from a folder to a group, we make a copy of that document and any annotations you make are not copied over. This means that you can leave personal notes for yourself across your whole library and not have to worry about scrubbing out private notes when you go to share something. Of course, this also means that notes you wanted to share will have to be re-added. In the future, you’ll be able to mark annotations as public or private so they can stay if you so choose.

Deleting vs. removing from a collection

Especially now that subfolders are a part of the client, you need to be aware of the difference between deleting a file and removing it from a collection. Deleting a file, including pressing the delete key, moves that file to the trash. It will be removed from any folders that it’s in, but it will not be removed from any groups you’ve shared it with. Each group keeps its own copy, so you can delete a document from one group without affecting the others. Note, however, that if you have subfolders under a group, deleting the document from any of the subfolders of the group removes it from all the subfolders under that group, as it would in your local folders. If you want to remove something from only one folder, that’s when you use “remove from collection”. Remove from collection is accessible via the right-click menu on PC and Linux, and the equivalent on a Mac. For those of you who use Gmail, it may make more sense to think of folders as labels.

Re-organizing existing folders and groups

This works pretty much like you’d expect, with a few exceptions. To make an existing folder into a subfolder of another, just drag the one you want to be a subfolder onto the parent folder. For groups, this won’t work, because groups also have comments and members and such, which you wouldn’t necessarily want to mash together. To make an existing group into a subfolder of a group, you’ll need to create the subfolder where you want it, drag the documents from the old group into the new subfolder, and then remove the old group. You’ll need to re-invite all the members of the group when you do this. We’re working on a easier group migration flow. Zoc terminal 7 23 1 download free. One other note when you’re moving files from one group or folder to the next. You need to select the folder from which you’re taking the documents so that those documents show in the center tabular view, then drag documents from there into the destination folder in the tree on the left. Copy & paste won’t work, as those keys are for copying and pasting formatted citations.

Tags are tagalicious

All that messing around with folders and subfolders might seem like more trouble than it’s worth, especially when the desktop search works so well. Those of you using gmail have probably already figured this out. Starting with search helps you find things fast, and the real usefulness of folders is for reducing the scope of your search. Tags work much the same as folders, with the key differences being that it’s easier to add a bunch of tags to a document than it is to drag it into several folder, and tags don’t take up much room in the interface. Other than that, they work pretty much the same in the client. On Mendeley Web you can also do some useful stuff with tags, such as browse all papers related to a tag, or see popular groups and people related to a tag.
